Northampton Town v Gillingham Preview
Northampton Town v Gillingham Preview

It’s make or break for Gillingham on Saturday as they play their penultimate fixture of the League Two season at Northampton.

Andy Hessenthaler’s side go into the game with the Cobblers knowing that they realistically have to win and hope results go their way to take their season into the last game against Morecambe.

A draw would almost certainly spell an end to their play-off hopes, whilst defeat will mean yet again they will have failed to make the top seven.

Hessenthaler would like to keep faith with the starting line up that did so well against Swindon a week ago, but skipper Andy Frampton (illness) and Chris Whelpdale (knee) are both rated as doubtful for the game.

Should either miss out, Hessenthaler has ready made replacements in Simon King and Curtis Weston waiting in the wings.

Once again, Hessenthaler seems set to name five outfield substitutes on the bench so as to keep his options open with Rowan Vine and Danny Spiller set to have to fill those spaces alongside Dennis Oli.

As for Northampton, they are playing for pride now, having had an indifferent season, but Gillingham will be more than aware of the potent force that is Adebayo Akinfenwa.

A return to the Sixfields Stadium for Danny Jackman will spur the diminuitive Gills midfielder on after two spells with the Cobblers.

The Gills could line up something like this:

Gazzaniga, Fish, Essam, Frampton, Martin, Lee, Montrose, Lee, Jackman, Kuffour, Kedwell.

Subs: King, Spiller, Weston, Oli, Vine.

Meanwhile, Northampton boss Aidy Boothroyd may be tempted to shuffle his side for the Gills game with nest season in mind:

“I’ve pretty much made my mind up what I want to do. I won’t be making too many changes but at the same time I would like to see one or two people in different positions,” said Boothroyd.

“I think it is right for the league that we try to win our two remaining games. Gillingham still have the play-offs to aim for and although we are safe, I want us to finish as high up the table as we possibly can.”
